New Orleans 2005 - Loughran Wedding

I attend many weddings - either as a vendor or as a guest. Budgets have ranged from pathetic to the most splendid imaginable. Often these parties are stiff affairs, with dysfunctional family relationships rearing their ugly heads. Or they can become ugly boozefests.

The Loughran Wedding, New Orleans 2005 goes down in my mind as the most fun wedding reception that I can ever recall attending. This is despite the fact that I DJ'd part of the reception and only partied with the crowd for an hour or so. There were about 100 guests, it was in some older country club in a modest facility. The food offerings were good, but surely not extravagant. The liquor selections were limited. But there was electricity in that room. The bride and groom came out of the box swaying to the beats of Queen, had a nice first dance to Burt Bacharach's "What the World Needs Now is Love," before leading the room in Chic's Good Times, and then a classic Beck party tune. The widow of Ernie K. Doe sang "White Boy" with Tom and others in a moving performance. There was a breakdancing exhibition to Beck's Hell Yes with about half a dozen participants. Mike Z, cautious since his Rio dancehall days, was a strong lead for his fiance Julie. Mr. Loughran, a 60-year old was cutting up the rug hard and won a dance competition. There were lights. There was fog. The kids were into it. The adults were into it. The Jambalaya tasted real good.

Some political band called "The Troublemakers" played the last hour, and I danced to just about every single song. The titles and topics were eclectic and normally I would have scoffed at such a menu. But it was really good. Their closing song was "Healthcare is a Human Right." Yes, I definitely agree.

The Marriot Rennaissance Hotel, our base, was a fantastic selection. It featured modern art and an art deco, boutique feel that you wouldn't expect from a corporate portfolio like Marriot. For $89 per night (with Triple A Discount), it was a steal.

Tom and Hope have strong chemistry and I detect that they are the proverbial soulmates. This is hard to find.

I took a nice tour of the city with an excellent tour guide named Raymond Poray. New Orleans has a rich history, and we just touched the tip of the iceberg. I enjoyed the tour of the above-ground cemetery and also the massive mansions in the Garden District.

Our first night in town, we stayed at a Ramada property on Bourbon Street which was quite nice. I did the Bourbon Street thing, had my Hurricanes and liquor, and ended up swaggering and leering my way back to the hotel late in the PM. I could still hear the music blaring at 3-4 AM as I was half asleep in my bed. In the morning, they hosed down that street to wash away its sin.

Club 2606 Party Mix - Tracklist

In preparation for a July 2nd house party, I have prepared a party mix compilation. Rather than mix the set, I have simply strung together a list of songs that are each played from beginning to end. The advantage of this system is that listeners can fast forward through songs they may not like (if any). Compilations are also easier to prepare.

As usual, I have included songs that I'm currently enraptured with ranging from mainstream to off-the-beaten trail; from hip hop to reggaeton to German techno to 90s Eurobeat.

Peep these liner notes:

Club 2606 – A Patriotic Dance Party Mix – Fourth of July Weekend 2005
Compiled by DJ Jagged

Jeff J. raises the bar in 2005 by hosting a fourth of July weekend house party with a bulging guest list. His 1,200 square foot monster addition has been retrofitted into “Club 2606”, a dance hall to be filled with driving techno beats, hypnotic trance and titillating hip hop as interpreted by the Tri-State area’s finest DJs. This compilation is designed to capture the flavor of the dance floor and spirit of Club 2606. Come one, come all!

Track Listing / Liner Notes:

1 America the Beautiful - Whitney Houston. First, let’s pay our props to this great nation of ours, sung by a classic American underdog.
2 Baby, Baby - Corona. A 90s Eurobeat winner sung by the sultry Corona.
3 Tonight is the Night – Le Click. Yes, tonight is the night!
4 Just a Lil’ Bit – 50 Cent. Get crackin’ in the club, rollin with 50 Cent and the G Unit… at least just a lil bit.
5 Hollaback Girl – Gwen Stefani. Club 2606 is the real bananas.
6 Badd – Ying Yang Twins with Mike Jones. This breakout tune has been thrown into the mix. Houston’s swiftest hustler, Mike Jones, is a name to put in your Rolodex.
7 Sing Hallelujah – Dr. Alban. Dr. Alban is where dancehall reggae meets mainstream dance… with top shelf results.
8 Pon de Replay – Rihanna. Rihanna wisely showers her DJ with accolades in this punchy dance tune.
9 Gasolina! - Daddy Yankee. An excellent representation of “Reggaeton”, a breaking musical style that fuses hip hop, reggae and Caribbean urban culture.
10 Shake It – Marascia. Tribal house music with a Latin percussion section off the hook.
11 Goin’ Crazy – Natalie. Take a breather for a slow dance with that special someone.
12 The Power – Snap! Revive, with Red Bull and some Snap!
13 Hell Yes – Beck. From Beck’s new album, “Guero”, this song lends itself to breakdancing or just posing.
14 Give Him Cornbread – Beau Jacque and the Zydeco Hi Rollers. Order a Hurricane or three and stroll Bourbon Street to the festive Zyedeco musical style.
15 Electrica Salsa - Artist Unknown. This was a staple song from the pinnacle of a disco called Dorian Gray located inside the Frankfurt airport.
16 Ride the Last Train – Young Parisians feat. Ben Lost. Plucked from a recent Paul Oakenfold mix tape, this song captures the bittersweet experience of clubbing with lines like “I’ll love you until I’m dead inside”.
17 Dream I Had of You – Artist Unknown. A haunting goth ballad that will hopefully capture your imagination.

A Surprise at the Franklin Lakes Party

Last night I was back to Franklin Lakes for the Randy H. party. He is the Wall Street exec. who throws lavish birthday bashes. This year, in the spirit of a firmer bottom line, the Pointer Sisters were hired to play for an hour. Yes, the Pointer Sisters!

When I arrived, I saw a huge tent and stage. The sound guys were running their checks. The roadcrew was about 15 people, and the band about eight people in total. This production was organized solely for a private party.

They looked great and sounded awesome. There were about 200 people there, so every seat was a box seat!

I played from 5:30 PM until 8:50, before the feature act came on. The mix was 50s and 60s rock, with a focus on Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, sock hop type music and doo wop. Some detours to classic rock were also taken. From 8:30, I was asked to get the crowd in a disco mood - which I did. All songs worked well, but a dance re-mix of She's the Greatest Dancer had too long and intro and I could tell the crowd needed more instant gratification.

I dined on roast beef and white wine during my break and took in the concert. The ladies still look youthful and energetic, barely older than Destiny's Child.

At 10 PM, I resumed the set, starting off on a mellower Motown and then reggae vibe, before bringing in Billy Ocean's Caribbean Queen.... followed by Rick Astley's Together Forever. The dancefloor was packed for an hour. During the first hour, I dropped in a dance remix of the Pointer Sisters' I'm So Excited with an excellent reaction. The evening session was all classic music - a lot of 80s, disco and some rock n' roll favorites. Brown Sugar by the Rolling Stones worked well. At 1:15 AM, I ended with some Barry White and proceeded to do a very humid load-out. It was steam room sticky!

Randy, decked out in a white suit, pink tie and blue Diesel sneaker/shoes, enjoyed the performance and threw in an extra $100 for the DJ! With the Pointer Sisters and a generous tipper, it doesn't get any better than this!

June - August Entertainment Card

April and May were whirlwind months with lots of progress. These months include a major corporate assignment, a move, a 10 day vacation (to Big Easy and Las Vegas) and lots of DJ work spread between performances, sales and servicing clients.

The Loughran wedding in New Orleans was off-the-hook, and deserves a separate post, which will come soon.

For June - August, the calendar looks like:

June 11 - Franklin Lakes Birthday Party for Wall Street Exec. (my return!). This party was over the top in extravagance and a willing dance floor last year.

June 12 - Sweet 16 in Manahawkin

June 18 - High School Graduation party in Hamilton, NJ

June 24 - Wedding Reception, somewhere in South Jersey

July 1 - Wedding Reception, West Orange

July 2 - House Party in Wall Twp. in theme called "CLUB 2606" - with guest appearances by DJ Struggler and DJ Lace

July 3 - Caribbean theme party, Morristown, NJ

July 9 - Wedding reception, Plainsboro, NJ

July 29 - Wedding reception, Morristown, NJ

August 14 - Wedding reception, New York state

August 20 - Wedding reception, East Brunswick, NJ

August 28 - Wedding reception, Scotch Plains, NJ

August 29 - Wedding reception, Clifton, NJ

Thanks from a Bride and Groom

Thanks Gregg,

We had a great time away. Both Isabel and I wanted to thank you for really
helping to make our wedding something to remember. You were willing to
work with us, and that made the process a lot easier. You played
everything we wanted, and yet added your own touch. You
understood our sensibilities and because we did so much of the wedding
ourselves, it made a huge difference in having things come off the way we
wanted them to.

As I stated before, I'm pretty good at remembering, so if I hear
anything from any of our friends (or family, I'll be sure to recommend
you. Also, I'm going to give your card to my sister-in-law which give some
much deserved business. Thanks again from the both of us, and we'll look
forward to your package!

Much thanks,
Chris & Isabel
