Weekend Grind

This weekend I played two rigorous events.

Friday night was a wedding up at the Madison Hotel in Morristown. The load-in was challenging in that the atrium was a five minute walk from the hotel entrance, and included several ramps. While I was able to use the dolly, the ramps put a good strain on my legs.

It was pre-cleared with the hall that I could set up my equipment from 5 PM - 6:30 PM in the atrium. There is a mezzanine above the main floor, and I was to set up on the right side. It was understood that I couldn't be in there from 6:45 PM - 7:30 when another ceremony would be going on. Well, the bride's mother from the first ceremony complained about my equipment being there. I had to load it in first, and it is in boxes, containers, etc. = it's not pretty to look at before it's set up and nicely arranged.

On the left side of the mezzanine was a classical quartet who were setting up at about the same time. I said hi to their leader, a woman named Deena. She had an ugly face with a big, acne pockmarked nose and nasty disposition. She was the one who sided with the bride's mother. I talked to everybody nicely and assured them that my gear would be set up nicely and that I'd be gone by 6:30! Things calmed down, but it was tense in there for a little while.

The bridal party was large, and I had to make 13 announcments. I missed one name's pronunciation, but got them in. There were several last minute changes that threw my flow off a little.

The reception itself started slow. Not many dancers, as it seemed that people were catching up. Some senior members of the families also have serious health issues.

I joined the photographer (Ronald Chicken and Ronald Chicken, Jr.) for dinner. Both were very pleasant. Ron, Sr. dispensed some wisdom about remembering to spend time with my boy during the weekends, as the time will fly by. He also cautioned about leaving gear in the SUV overnight. Great advice. Ron, Jr., who is starting college at Montclair State, has some panache for international studies, and I advised him to try an exchange program.

The party came to life after dinner, and the guests danced a lot. We finished with What is Love by Haddaway (extended remix) and I Wanna Grow Old with You (Adam Sandler) for last song. The bride and groom tipped me $50.

The load out was tough; I was out of there by 1:40 AM and back home by 3 AM. Driving home, I'm always pumped up from the activity of the evening. I slept from 3:30 AM to 7:30 AM. Saturday morning I took Charlotte to the doctor's for her checkup. Just one month to go! The baby is healthy and we are on track. Charlotte still has a "feeling" that the baby will come early. I am traveling to Ohio on business this Thursday, so please don't have the baby then!

I departed at 10:30 AM for Saturday's party in Rumson, NJ. It was at a riverfront house with a beautiful property, commemorating the family matriarch's 90th birthday party. The musical program emphasized oldies. There was little crowd feedback, and the time tended to drag. I played for 51/2 hours, and then loaded out (another challenging route through grass). My body was shot! Today, it still is. Weddings and family style parties are not so glamorous as the dance-oriented parties that I thrive in. This is when it feels more like a job.

I'm going to take some of this weekend's cash flow and pay down some credit card debt, sticking to our family financial plan. I am still 'paying' for a 6 month bout of unemployment during which time some large medical expenses also hit the family. We are digging out of the hole, but it is taking some sacrifice. Heck, nobody hands you success on a golden platter. I've gotta hustle like Jay Z. In the meantime, we are residing in a much nicer rental with two bedrooms and hardwood parquet floors.

Next weekend, we will host a house party in Lawrenceville, with fine cuisine, wine and camraderie. No DJ'ing. I'm looking forward to a brief rest. August features a lot of jobs, heavy work at my day job in finance, and a new baby(?).

Today, I booked a bride for an October 16th wedding in Middlesex (the town) near Piscataway. August and October are looking very strong. September is deliberately slow and will include some more fun gigs.

Baby Names - Down to the Final Four

Naming our second baby boy has proved to be more challenging than our first. Zachary came quite easily. We have been putzing around on names for Baby X who is due on September 3rd.

First, we agreed to a middle name of Arthur, in memory of my late grandfather.

For the first name, we are down to the following:

1) Lance Arthur Hollmann (LAH) - Lance has a contemporary flair, and with Lance Armstrong's recent consecutive Tour de France victory and winner's lifestyle, Lance is a frontrunner. Easy to pronounce and complements Zach well.

2) Maxwell Arthur Hollmann (MAH) - Max epitomizes the alpha male, and is a tribue to progressive trance DJ, Max Graham.

3) Sebastien Arthur Hollmann (SAH) - Sebastien borders on the exotic and ethnic, but has panache.

4) Charles Arthur Hollmann (CAH) - Charles is a safer choice. As a boy, he could be "Charlie" - a cute name. As an adult, the respectable "Charles". Charles would be similar to Charlotte, a positive from her perspective, and perhaps a minor negative from the standpoint of household management.

New Mix CD Recorded Last Night

As a party favor, I recorded a one hour mix CD for the Union Beach, NJ power couple. Plus, I was in the mood to record some hip hop. Technically and artistically, I thought that the mix came out very well. I sparingly threw in some 'DJ Jagged' audio drops. Here's the track listing.

Normandy Beach Gig Reviewed

I returned to Normandy Beach for a repeat performance at an annual family get-together.

I left at 11 AM, for a 12:30 expected arrival, and anticipated 1:30 PM start-time. It was smooth sailing from Lawrenceville to the Route 34 south exit, but that's where the trouble began. Traffic was backed up a long ways. I thought that it was just beach traffic volume, but apparently there was an accident on the Pt. Pleasant bridge (thus, the two ambulances). I didn't arrive at the party until 1 PM, meaning a one hour snail's crawl in the final stretch. Still, the music started promptly at 1:30 PM.

Dennis, the family patriarch, was in good spirits and I dropped lots of oldies in the first hour for the older crowd - Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Louis Armstrong and so on. The inquisitive kids were back! They were back with tons of questions and carefully studied my CDs. Yet they didn't tire of hanging out with the DJ, so we were together all afternoon. As the afternoon progressed, I put in lots of the younger people's requests, but still tried to keep things on a common ground. A 25th wedding anniversary dedication with Chicago's Color My World was played. They had me stay on for an extra half hour and threw in an extra $50.... very nice.

I didn't have any shade and it was mostly sunny, making it difficult working conditions. I drank about 5 bottles of water to stay hydrated and lubed up with sunblock. The girls requested the Ketchup Song, a rare request that I was happy to satisfy.

Wedding Crashers Reviewed - Go See It!

It was with great anticipation that I viewed the Wedding Crashers last night. Wow, what a funny movie! Cheeseballs Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are divorce mediators by day, and "wedding crashers" by weekend. Their formula is to infiltrate a wedding/reception, be highly outgoing guests and then seduce the ladies. The initial scenes are a collage of wedding events and women, and very satisfying. Rather than cover a large number of events in little depth, the plot moves on to the main story.

Vaughn proposes the biggest crash yet - that of the Secretary of Treasury's daughter's wedding. The Secretary of Treasury is played by the ghastly white and somewhat creepy Christopher Walken (one of my favorites!). Vaughn and Wilson sucessfully infiltrate the wedding and reception, but then find themselves at a weekend afterparty at Walken's waterfront mansion. Walken's family is zanier than the Fokker's, and there are so many laughs to be had. The dialogue is brilliant and Vince Vaughn in particular is at the top of his game.

The underlying love stories are very good. A cameo by Will Ferrell takes the comedy over the top! There's lots of raunchy language and some pleasant nudity, so keep the young 'uns at home!

Too bad there were no DJs featured in the movie, just stuffy big bands. In my mind, I've always thought that "crashing a wedding" would be easy. In reality, I think that it would be pretty difficult, with a good chance of getting your ass kicked if discovered, if not arrested!

Hi Gregg,

I just wanted to tell you thanks for doing such a great job. Thanks for
helping to make the wedding a huge success. Everyone had a great time.

Also, my mom said she thought the Mariachis gave you their card, and she
was wondering if you could give us their phone number. She had found
them through the Princeton Music Connection, but would like to be able to
contact them directly.

Anyway, we will definitely recommend your services to anyone looking for a
DJ.

Thanks again,

Alison

A Weekend Off

This weekend marks the first in many that I have off. It is a welcome relief. The family will travel to Connecticut today to visit my grandmother, Grandma Dot. She recently turned 93 years old. She continues to live independently at home, but has suffered from numerous falls this year, and is also afflicted from the wear & tear of old age. Her mind and spirit have remained sharp, and I look forward to seeing her.

I closed an engagement party for August 13th yesterday in Union Beach, NJ. I guess they call this the BAY DISTRICT. August is going to be very busy, perhaps record breaking. Believe it or not, April remains my month to beat.

From all that I know, yesterday's audio drop session with Elle proceeded smoothly. Tom from Blue Claw Music has been professional and easy to deal with.

Court Tavern Debut and Other Nuggets

I received a call from Matt C at 2 PM on Monday while on official business in Manhattan.  He said that the owner of the Court Tavern had green lighted our electronica night -  for that night!  Great opportunity, but regrettably not a lot of notice to bring some friends and fans along.

I contacted DJ Struggler, who as a resident of New Brunswick, was available to join the exhibition.  Normally, Monday nights at the Court Tavern are open mic nights.  A few aspiring artists had shown up to hawk their wares, and were disappointed to see our DJ table in the back.  One 40 year old cowboy with a guitar was visibly disturbed, and asked us to keep it "chill" while he mourned the loss of a bar mate from the Tavern who had passed away over the weekend.

Matt C was able to bring along half a dozen friends, plus there were some other locals in the house.  Struggler put on some alternative, indie rock for starters.  At about 10:30, Matt C came on and dropped a solid hour-plus set of funky house.  Song selections stayed within genre and similar tempo, allowing non-stop seamless mix.  Strong finishing song as well.  I sat at a barstool, right in the sweet spot of the music, and enjoyed listening to the music at high volume on good speakers.  Those Mackie 1521s sound nice.

Struggler and I finished out the evening, deciding to go with a hip hop set and keep it fresh.  We sensed that some of the patrons were on the verge of bailing.  We played for about an hour and did suffer a net loss of patrons, but it was fun.  Surely, the club scene is far different from the private party / wedding circuit.  The money is the latter, but the glamour is in the former.

Over this past 10 days, I booked some more parties:  two weddings (one in Long Branch, one in New Hope, PA), both in the Fall; plus four private parties:  Keyport, East Hanover, Swedesboro, and Farmingdale.  The respective party types are twins birthday party, baby shower, house party and engagement party.  Wasn't it Mike Z who said that "variety is the spice of life?"

I ordered 1,000 more business cards, and some Ambient DJ stationery.

That's all.  Peace out.

Custom Audio Drops

This Friday, I am having recorded some audio drops. Originally I was going to have an amateur record this, but a real recording studio with real artists contacted me, and the rates were very reasonable. Here are the instructions that I provided:

AUDIO DROPS

Overall artistic direction - I intend on using these drops for my live sets and mix CD projects. Most of the phrases would tend to be dropped in over a house or tech-house style beat of 120-130 BPM. There are a few hip hop style phrases that would be at slower tempos. Elle, you are welcome to use your judgment to enhance any of the below. I don’t want these drops to sound cheesy and commercial, but more relaxed, underground, sexy. Thank you.

1. “DJ Jagged iz in tha house!” (enthusiastic, feel free to use artistic license for this phrase or any of the others)
2. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen. You’re in for a real treat tonight. We’ve got Gregg from Ambient DJ Service in the booth, dropping hits for you all night long.” (announcement, enthusiastic) (pronunciation= AM-BEE-ENT)
3. “Good evening party people. You’re in for a real treat tonight. We’ve got DJ Jagged from Ambient DJs on the wheels of steel, rockin’ the party all night long.” (announcement, enthusiastic).
4. “And now welcome to the booth, the kingpin of hip hop, DJ Jagged” (announcement, enthusiastic)
5. “And now welcome to the booth, the avatar of electronic dance music, DJ Jagged” (announcement, enthusiastic)
6. “Turn up the temperature DJ Jagged” (sexy)
7. “Take me to the next level DJ Jagged” (sexy)
8. “Hit the crossfader DJ Jagged, and make me happy” (sexy)
9. “Yeah” (sexy)
10. “Ohhh” (sexy)
11. “I only roll with DJ Jagged and his G Unit Posse” (definitive, as if stating a fact)
12. “DJ Jagged, you’ve got me locked in a groove” (sexy)
13. “Show me your New Jersey, DJ Jagged” (emphasis on the word ‘your’)
14. “Show me your Miami, DJ Jagged” (emphasis on the word ‘your’)
15. “DJ Jagged” (sexy)
16. “DJ……. Jagged” (sexy…. Place some silence between the words and imagine a beats per minute of about 120)
17. “Rescue me DJ Jagged” (sexy, slight distress)
18. “This music is making me hot” (sexy)
19. “That’s hot!” (sexy, or an imitation of Paris Hilton’s catch phrase)
20. “I’m feeling sexy” (sexy)
21. “Do what you like, and blame it on DJ Jagged” (teasing)
22. “Save me from myself, DJ Jagged” (slight distress)
23. “Jagged what? Jagged who?” (in the style of Jay Z’s Jigga What, Jigga Who lyric from Hard Knock Life album)
24. “DJ Jagged, beats more jagged than the Manhattan skyline” (definitive/promotional, as if in stating a fact)
25. “Go Jagged… go jagged… go jagged…. Go jagged” (enthusiastic, hip hop style)
26. “You’re tuned in to Ambient Radio with DJ Jagged” (‘AM BEE ENT’)
27. “It’s time to shake your booties to the beats of DJ Jagged” (enthusiastic)
28. “Work those tables, Jagged” (motivational)
29. “And now it’s time to meet DJ Struggler, the beat juggler... the Colt 45 smuggler… the booty juggler. DJ Struggler is in the house!” (enthusiastic!)
30. “DJ Struggler, nastier than the 2 Live Crew” (definitive, slightly disgusted)
31. “I only pay my props to Mike Z”
32. “Ambient DJ Service is in the house” (enthusiastic, more hip hop style)
33. “DJ Jagged in full effect” (enthusiastic, more hip hop style)
34. “What?” (confused)

Plainsboro Wedding Reception

This past Saturday, I kicked it in my beloved town of Plainsboro. The wedding ceremony was in the front yard and officiated by the mayor, and the reception was in the backyard under a big tent with windows and pullout sides.

The weather was a rollercoaster ride. On Friday, NJ got hammered with heavy rains from a tropical storm. Saturday morning was clear and sunny, and fortunately the weather was picture perfect for the ceremony. The reception was another matter. The rain came suddenly and hard. The sides of the tent went up. Then it cleared. The sides of the tent went down again (a major endeavor). The rain returned later. Despite these problems, the party went smoothly.

The crowd went for a little bit of this... and that. For the Texans, God Blessed Texas and The Fireman by George Strait were successes. Sweet Home Alabama, Free Bird and On the Radio were big hits. Don't Cha by the Pussy Cat Dolls and She Bangs by Ricky Martin were misses. The Don't Cha CD single giveaways went to two young ladies.

The groom and his brother had a misunderstanding the night before the wedding, and the brother did not attend. I was sad to see this. They had a Mariachi band in these cool boots for cocktail hour, which was very exotic. The father of the groom is from Mexico, and wife is from Oregon.

Very nice couple, nice result, kudos from all.

My best of Kenny Rogers CD came up short in an important way. Must check and double check the hallmark wedding dance songs.

Club 2606 Wrap-up

The July 2nd party which featured at an outdoors barbeque supplemented by a "rave style" dance in the adjacent 1,200 square foot addition labelled Club 2606 was a mixed success.

The daytime crowds were good, and many enjoyed the roast pig (an 83 pounder prepared in a cast iron coffin by two pros), the BBQ chicken and assorted salads. The Miller Lite on keg tasted rancid as always, but I indulged nonetheless. I was set up in a shady veranda on the back porch which was an ideal vantage point. During the afternoon, there were some giveaways - Club 2606 mix CDs, doo rags, an old Vanilla Ice CD, and an old Barry Manilow album. One lady approached the booth and whined that she'd never won anything in her life. She carefully considered the options, and grabbed a Club 2606 mix CD. Those who correctly named that tune from TV theme shows won a prize. The themes were easy and included Hawaii 5-0, Knight Rider and M-A-S-H.

For whatever reason, time flew by and it was suddenly 7:30 PM. DJ Struggler was still MIA. Colleen, aka DJ Blaze, formerly known as DJ Lace, had scratched from the card. The ladies were starting to dance on the back porch, and I went with it. The action was good for an hour or so, and then I announced that we were transitioning to Club 2606 and asked them not to go away. I unleashed a box of glow stick goodies which went over well (rings, sticks, mouth glow products, hairpieces, toe rings and more). A ragtag crew which included Mike Z, Gregg W and DJ Struggler helped porter the gear over. We were down for about half an hour. I changed into my trademark orange lounge shirt.

The space looked great. Props to mad Joe McGrath for providing signage, including - CLUB 2606, DJ Jagged, DJ Struggler. Struggler provided lots of additional wall hangings. There were off-the-shelf posters of Jessica Simpson, Beyonce, Paris Hilton and Scarface. A disco ball, hanging lanterns, fog machine and a VIP room with its own PVC pipe "stripper's pole." The DJ booth was in the loft above the dance floor. It was a fantastic setup.

Regrettably, the crowd started thinning quickly. DJ Struggler started off the set with a track that sounded something like a rape scene???!!!!! We may have lost a few more. We started with about 15, lost about 5, and worked with 0-10 for the rest of the evening. The remaining ten were into the scene though - Joselle, Garnett, John V & Sandy, some karaoke loving drunks, Grace and Melanie.

There were many no-shows, and the early start time also may have caused too many to leave before sampling Club 2606. The 30-something demographic may also lack the stamina of the twenties crowd. Another negative was that we failed to get a seal of approval from faction leaders like Nutty, Esq. who will bring a gang of twenty. The VIP room remained empty all night. Jeff J. had many no-shows from his side of the card. I had expected a dancefloor of 40-50.

Up in the DJ's booth, Struggler and I banged out mostly hip hop, 80s and U2-rock. Later in the evening, we brought out the Peaches, playing two tracks, and then later getting a crowd request for a third. With a real cowbell on a handle and drumstick, we fired up the crowd to cowbell songs like 99 Problems and Hey Ladies (during this song, Struggler mooned the dancefloor - pants on! through the 2 x 4 beams.... Struggler, isn't that antic better served for Shake your Rump?). In the late evening, Struggler put on this heavily distorted electronica piece - a very dissonant track that had appeared to clear the floor. He then tapped me on the shoulder and urged me to take a closer look. There was one drunk - an older woman who was all rock n' roll, continuing to dance! It was rewarding to see such a loyal fan. Later on, Struggler dropped the cowbell down the stairs, perhaps distracted from his schmoozing with Jeff's neighbors.

We broke down at 1 AM - pretty early for this sort of event. Did we have fun? Yes, surely. Could it have been much better? Of course. Club 2606 performed far below its potential. Pictures to be posted soon!

Thank You

Dear Gregg,
We are finally returning to normal after the wedding and seeing the return
of our family to England. I wanted to thank you for your wonderful work
(and patience with our song list) for our wedding. We have some parties
coming up in the near future (including a Sweet 16) and will be in touch.
Let me know if you need me to provide any references for you.
